Zona Glomerulosa

The zona glomerulosa produces aldosterone.

Aldosterone production is mainly under influence of the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system.

Aldosterone release is under angiotensin II and K+ regulation.

  • Specificity of the mineralocorticoid receptor is conferred by specificity in tissue distribution and localized conversion of glucocorticoids to cortisone by 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase.
  • Aldosterone increases renal sodium reabsorption and in exchange stimulates potassium excretion.
  • Aldosterone originates from chlesterol
